Boulder Community Health becomes a Watson Caring Science Institute Affiliate (WCSI)

Join us for an inspiring conversation with Jean Watson, Stanford Health Care and Boulder Community Health to learn more about how caring science is changing the future of health care locally, nationally and around the world. 

The WSCI is an international non-profit organization that advances the philosophies, theories and practices of Human Caring/Caring Science. It was founded by Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, who serves as founder and director. Focusing on research, education, praxis and legacy, the institute aims to widen the development and understanding of Caring Science to inform our notion of quality care and healing environments. Currently there are over 400 hospitals throughout the USA with many other partner Healthcare systems globally using the WCSI theory. There are now over 400 WCSI trained practitioner leaders or ‘Caritas Coaches®’ throughout the world. Texts on Watson’s theory of caring is taught in Universities worldwide and translated into over 7 languages.

Jackie joined BCH in 2011. Jackie has a passion for patient safety and quality improvement and has had this focus throughout her career. She serves on several healthcare boards representing BCH and serves on the Board of Golden West Retirement Community in Boulder. She is honored to serve this community and the staff of BCH and is thrilled to bring the caring science practices to BCH.   

Prior to joining BCH, Jackie worked for 25 years at the Mayo Clinic in various nursing leadership positions. She graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, with a bachelor of arts degree in nursing and from Winona State University in Winona, MN, with a master of science in nursing. She is Certified in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP).

Dr. Jean Watson is Distinguished Professor and Dean Emerita, University of Colorado Denver, College of Nursing Anschutz Medical Center campus, where she held the nation’s first endowed Chair in Caring Science for 16 years. She is a widely published author and recipient of many national/international awards and honors, and author/co-author of over 30 books. Jean has been designated as a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing, its highest honor, and has been awarded 15 Honorary Doctorates – 12 International Honorary Doctorates.

She is Founder of the original Center for Human Caring in Colorado and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing; past President of the National League for Nursing; founding member of International Association in Human Caring and International Caritas Consortium. She is Founder and Director of the non-profit foundation, Watson Caring Science Institute.

     
Dale E. Beatty, DNP, RN, NEA-BC  

Dale E. Beatty, DNP, RN, NEA-BC

Dr. Beatty is the Chief Nurse Executive and Vice President at Stanford Health Care which is a premier academic health system and is the flagship hospital for Stanford University.

Dr. Beatty has 20 years of Chief Nursing Officer experience in high performing organizations and has served on multiple boards. He has extensive experience with ANCC Magnet and the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. 

He has a BSN from Ohio Wesleyan University, a Master of Science with Distinction from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois. He is also board certified as a Nurse Executive Advanced by the ANCC and is a certified Caritas Coach®. Dale is a board member for the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL).

     
Grissel Hernandez, PhD, MPH, RN, HNB-BC  

Grissel Hernandez, PhD, MPH, RN, HNB-BC

Dr. Hernandez is the Executive Director at Stanford Health Care Center for Education and Professional Development (CEPD). She has 20 years of Nursing Professional Development experience in ANCC Magnet and the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award designated organizations. 

Dr. Hernandez is an Adjunct Faculty for Watson Caring Science Institute and a founding member of Regional Caritas Consortiums in NY/NJ/PA and CA. She also coordinates the operationalization and integration plan of Watson's Caring Science theory into practice, education, leadership, and research at Stanford Health Care.

She has a BSN from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Public Health from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Her qualitative research study aimed to describe and understand the lived experience of nurse leaders practicing within Watson Caring Science framework (aka. Caritas Coaches®), creating a caring, healing environment for staff.

Sarah E. Wise, BSN, RN

For over 30 years, Sarah E. Wise, RN, BSN has provided care to people during times of crisis and at the end-of-life in their homes, hospices, and hospitals.  She has cultivated a keen understanding of compassion and what it means to care. Each person’s humanity and dignity are at the center of her nursing practice whether she is in the room caring for a person who has COVID-19, collaborating to create caring systems or inspiring change that rehumanizes healthcare.
